PPE: The Last Line, Not the First
reg 44 ยท reg 45 ยท reg 46 ยท reg 47
Why it matters
Personal protective equipment is the last control in the hierarchy, not the first, because it only protects the person wearing it and only if it is worn right. Boots, glasses, gloves, hi-vis, and hearing protection are the gear between you and a bad day, but they never fix a hazard: they just catch what the other controls missed.
Hazards
- โ Treating PPE as a substitute for fixing the hazard
- โ Wrong PPE for the task, or damaged and worn-out gear
- โ Eye and hearing protection left off for a quick job
- โ Poorly fitted respirators that leak
- โ PPE not maintained, cleaned, or replaced
Controls and safe practices
- โ PPE is the last resort after higher controls: provide and use it under reg 44 to reg 47.
- โ Match the PPE to the task: the right glasses, gloves, respirator, and hearing protection.
- โ Fit-test respirators and make sure hi-vis, boots, and helmets fit and are worn.
- โ Inspect PPE before use and replace anything damaged or expired.
- โ Keep PPE clean, maintained, and stored properly.
- โ No "quick job" exceptions for eye and hearing protection.
Crew discussion questions
- What PPE does today's work actually require?
- Is anyone wearing damaged or wrong PPE right now?
- Have the respirator users been fit-tested?
- Where do we get replacement PPE when gear wears out?
