White Cards and Site Induction
reg 316 ยท reg 317
Why it matters
Every worker who carries out construction work must hold general construction induction training: the white card. It is the baseline, not the finish line. The site induction on top of it is where you learn the things a card can never teach: this site's hazards, this site's rules, and who to call when something goes wrong.
Hazards
- โ Workers on site without a valid white card
- โ Skipping the site induction and missing site-specific hazards
- โ Not knowing the emergency and muster arrangements
- โ New workers unfamiliar with the site's traffic and exclusion zones
Controls and safe practices
- โ Every worker holds a general construction induction card (white card) before starting work (reg 316, reg 317).
- โ Complete the site induction before first entry: hazards, rules, amenities, and emergency plan.
- โ Know the muster point, first aiders, and how to raise the alarm.
- โ Brief every new worker and visitor on the current site hazards and controls.
- โ Keep induction records current and check cards on engagement.
Crew discussion questions
- Does everyone on site today hold a current white card?
- Has everyone had the site induction, including new starters?
- Where is the muster point and who are the first aiders?
- What changed on site this week that new workers need to know?
